Like many homeowners, you constantly face the threat of plumbing problems occurring in your home, even if you perform regular plumbing maintenance. While you can deal with some of these problems yourself, others require the intervention of a professional plumber.

When should you resist the temptation to perform DIY repairs and enlist a plumber's help instead? Here are some common reasons to use a plumber for repairs.

When you suddenly have no water

You can't live without water in your home, regardless of whether you get your water supply from the municipality or a private well. If you open your faucets and no water comes out, confirm that the main water shut-off valve isn't closed – a household member might have closed it without your knowledge.

If the valve is still open, check with your neighbours to see if you're the only one affected by the problem. If you use well water, check if the water level is adequate for the pump to move it to the surface.

If the issue isn't with the source of your water supply, seek an experienced plumber.

When you can't unclog your sink or toilet with a plunger

Plungers are one of those basic plumbing tools every homeowner should have. Three main types of plungers are available – common, flange and accordion plungers. Common plungers are suitable for unblocking sinks while their flange and accordion counterparts are ideal for clearing toilet clogs.

If you can't fix your partially clogged sinks and toilet with a plunger, you should bring in a plumber before the problem escalates, causing questionable water to back up in your home.

When all of the drains in your house are blocked

Blockages can occur in individual drains or all of the drains throughout your house. If the problem affects all your drains and is not unique to specific ones, chances are high that your sewer line is clogged.

Several factors can cause your sewer pipes to become clogged. These include aging pipes, poor or inadequate sewer maintenance, tree root intrusion, pipe collapse and more. If water stagnates in your sinks and rises in the toilet bowl when you flush the toilet, it's probably best to call a plumber.

When you don't have hot water

Aside from working on your water supply line, drains and sewer lines, residential plumbers also fix malfunctioning water heaters. If the water coming from your hot water faucets and showerheads is cold instead of hot, don't hesitate to have a plumber check your hot water unit.

Professional plumbers are trained and equipped to tackle all sorts of plumbing problems, whether big or small. Contact them for any plumbing repairs you can't handle yourself. Reach out to a local plumber to get started.
